Who must show the extract
| Situation | Extract required |
|---|---|
| Employment in preschool, school, after-school care, high school, or adult education (komvux) | Yes. Both registers, no more than six months old. |
| Assignment, staffing, or work through a company engaged by the school | Yes. The extract is shown to the person deciding to engage you. |
| Internship in teacher education or vocational training within adult education (komvux) | Yes, before the work-based part. |
| Internship through the Employment Service in the activity | Yes. |
| Student in adult education (komvux) | No. The requirement applies to those who will work or do an internship, not those who study. |
| New employment with the same employer within six months | No, if you have already shown an extract. |
| Already employed, just because time has passed | No. The school cannot require a new extract under the Education Act solely for that reason. |
The list of activities is available at the Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket): from preschool and open after-school activities to adapted high school and adult education (komvux). The legal support is Chapter 2, Sections 31 and 33 of the Education Act, as amended by SFS 2026:760.
What the line in the suspicion register means
A line in the criminal records register is a conviction or a sanction. A line in the suspicion part is a suspicion that has led to prosecution for an offense covered by the extract. It does not mean you are convicted. The case may be ongoing. If an entry is incorrect or should have been deleted, correct it with the Police before showing the document. The employer does not save a copy you can dispute afterward.
Showing the extract is a legal requirement. A certain line does not automatically mean no. The principal assesses suitability. Ask to know if it is the showing or the content that stops the employment, and request it in writing if you receive a no.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to show the suspicion register to get a job in the school?
You must show an extract that includes both the criminal record and the suspicion register. Without the extract, you cannot be employed. A line about an indictment is not in itself a prohibition on employment.
How old can the extract be?
No more than six months on the day you show it. Before July 15, 2026, the limit was one year.
Does it apply to adult education (komvux)?
Yes, for those who are employed, engaged, or received to work or do a workplace-based part there. It does not apply to you if you are only a student.
Can the school keep a copy?
No. The employer may only note that the extract has been shown.
Can the school require a new extract every year from me who is already employed?
Not supported by the Education Act, just because time has passed. The six-month exception applies when the same employer re-employs, engages, or receives you within six months.
Does a dismissed report appear?
Not according to the Police's description. The suspicion section concerns suspicions that have led to an indictment for the crimes covered by the extract.
